During the summer, the Mediterranean is mostly under the influence of the sub-tropical high pressure belt, between what we call, the Ferrel and the Hadley cells.
During the winter, everything moves more south and sometimes, low pressures bringing rain come from the Atlantic either through the Strait of Gibraltar or along the north side of the Pyrenean mountains. The latter usually causes bad weather in the north-west Mediterranean as the low pressure settles over the Baleares island.
