Three people rent a room at $30. They pay $10 each and go up to the room. The owner realized he charged too much and it was only supposed to be $25. He sends the bell hop up with the $5. Each of the people keeps $1 and they give the bellhop $2 as they can't share it. So now each person has paid $9 for the room (total $27) and the bell hop has $2... where is the other $1???

The given question says :-

Each man pays $ 9 for the room .

There are 3 men and hence the total will be $ 9 × 3 = $ 27 .

Now let us get back to the other information provided :-

The bell hop was given $ 2 from each person .

So the bell hop got in total $ 6 .

Now the persons kept each $ 1 .

So total money they paid = $ 30 -$ 3 = $ 27 .

But the main mystery lies in the missing dollar . is n't it ?

The bell hop got $ 6 .

So the hotel got in total $ 25 + $ 6

= $ 31 .

Hence the dollar has been added to the hotel .

This is the answer !

The $ 1 along with $ 30 is with the hotel and bellhop .
