There is no doubt that the dejection is better than a fake promise. Fake promises bad not only for the person who believes in that promise but also for the person makes a promise. Self esteem goes down and credibility is lost. Both are going to hurt, but-
A clear rejection will indicate you to move on.
Fake promises will raise your hopes so high and take you to point after which you won't be able to accept the truth and you'll be so broken that you'd find it impossible to move on.
