Optically active 2-iodobutane on treatment with Nal in acetone gives a product which does not show optical activity. Explain briefly.​

  • A carbon which is attached to the four different group or atoms are called asymmetric carbon. And the place which have asymmetric carbon is called asymmetric carbon.  
  • Optical isomerism is arises at the asymmetric centre of the compound and forms two mirror images they are non-super impossible each other called optical isomers.
  • If an optical isomer rotates clock wise called L- form, if an optical isomer rotates anti-clock wise called d-form.
  • Racemic mixture has equal volume of L and d forms. They didn’t show ‘optical activity’.
  • Optically active “2-iodobutane” on treatment with NaI in “acetone gives a racemic mixture”.
