Pi times the diameter squared divided by 4 is used to determine the area of a circular surface when diameter is given.

Area of circle = πr²

where r is the radius of the circle

Diameter = 2 * radius =>D = 2r

=>r = D/2

Now if we write the formula for area of a circle in terms of diameter,i.e replacing r by D it becomes,

Area = π*(D/2)*(D/2) = ( π*D*D)/4 = πD²/4
