Optoelectronics deals with the interaction of electronic processes with optical processes. As a solar energy converter Silicon is technologically good but due to small energy gap, its conversion efficiency is low. Design a solar energy convertor suggesting the choice of various semiconducting materials on the basis of their band gaps and structures that would offer desired properties for optoelectronic applications.

Answer:

Some electronic applications depend on the interactions between light and semiconductor materials mentioned in the section Optoelectronics. Such applications include the conversion of sunlight to electricity in solar cells. Most cells of this type consist of silicon diodes in specially designed enclosures to allow sunlight to illuminate them. Silicon is transparent to infrared light; this component of solar radiation passes through a solar cell without generating electricity
