Respected chief guest, parents and my fellow graduating class of 2019. I am blessed to be here today, thanking my peers, teachers and above all my parents who have made this day possible for me.

I am honored to be selected as the valedictorian of this years graduating batch. I find it in me that this is one of the greatest achievements of my past 8 years. We have all spent much time here, have conquered a few battles and have many more to conquer. I wish myself the luck needed to do so and the luck to my fellows.

Scholarship Jacket Thank You Speech

Welcome,

My name is Martha. I am a 8th grader that is graduating. I am up here because the school is honoring me with the scholarship jacket, which you may know, is for the student who maintains the highest grades for 8 years straight. Now, I will begin my speech about my journey to getting the scholarship jacket,

It began years ago when I started attending this school. I had a chip on my shoulder, because I had known the tradition here at this school, where the school hands out a jacket for the highest grades throughout your tenure at this school. I also knew that my older sister, Rosie, had also received the scholarship jacket; she has graduated from this school already. Knowing that, I had to try very hard to continue the tradition in the family and obtain the jacket.

8 years later, I am in 8th grade, and about to graduate. I am in line to get the jacket, but there were many challenges that could have derailed me from earning the jacket. One day, the principal calls me into his office. He had informed me that the Board had made a change in the scholarship jacket policy and it would no longer be free. The Board is charging $15 for the jacket. Hearing that, I knew that Joann was the next person in line for the jacket. Her father was on the Board, and he could have led the discussion on the proposition. I left the Principal's office that day, in dismay that Joann's dad and the Board changed the policy for the jacket.

Later that afternoon, I talked to my grandfather, and I told my grandfather that the board has changed the policy for the scholarship jacket won't be free anymore. He said, "Tell your principal I won't pay for that jacket. If I pay for it, it won't be a scholarship jacket anymore." I took those words seriously, and told the principal what my grandpa said. I remember he needed a second to think about it first, and told me that I will get the scholarship jacket for free, and told the Board of his decision. I went home that day, crying in tears of joy.

As I stand before you all, I had a very long journey to obtain this jacket. I want to thank the principal for understanding my situation about the jacket. I want to also thank my grandpa for helping throughout this situation; without his advice, I would have not been up here today. My tenure here has come to a close, I will miss all of my friends here. Thank you for coming today to celebrate your child's accomplishments.

Thank you,

Martha
