A pi bond is one that forms as a result of population of pi symmetry molecular orbitals. A pi molecular orbital has a single nodal plane - that is a plane across which the phase of the wavefunction changes - coincident with the bonding axis. By contrast, sigma orbitals have no nodal planes coincident with the bonding axis while delta have two. Others will probably tell you that pi-bonds are formed when in phase p orbitals overlap, but this is only one example, they can also form from (e.g.) overlap of a px with a dxz (assuming the bonding axis is on the z-axis) or dxz + dxz.
