The order reactivity of alkyl halides is 3°>2°>1°. Thus 3° being more prone to elimination undergo elimination rather than substitution(wurtz reaction) in presence of strong base i.e; Na metal. So unwanted product that is alkene is formed. ... How can a Wurtz reaction product obtain from tert alkyl halide?

Hii Friend,

◆ Answer -

Order of reactivity of chloroalkanes for Wurtz reaction => 1° > 2° > 3°

● Wurtz reaction-

  • Alkyl halides react with sodium metal in presence of ether to form higher alkanes.

2R-X + 2Na ---> R-R + 2NaX

  • It is substitution reaction, thus favoured by primary alkyl halides.
  • Tertiary halides being more prone to elimination get converted to alkenes.
  • Order of reactivity of chloroalkanes for Wurtz reaction => 1° > 2° > 3°

Thanks dear...
