Lysosome cell organelles are known as suicide bags, as they can digest the cell itself when it has been infected by a further foreign organism. They also regulate fat breakdown in cases of food shortage and other such situations. They have digestive enzymes and their main function is to bring about cellular breakdown. They are synthesized by rough endoplasmic reticulum.

Lysosomes are reffered as the Suicide bags of cell.

Lysosomes are found only in animal cells. These are spherical and sac-like vesicles bounded by a single membrane. These Contain several digestive enzymes which are synthesised in RER, are concentrated in Golgi apparatus and packed in lysosomes. When released, these enzymes bring about digestion of various cytoplasmic structures. If these enzymes are released in cell, they would result in autodigestion of the cell. Hence, lysosomes are reffered as the Suicide bags of cell.

FUNCTIONS -

1. Lysosomes protect the body from bacteria and viruses by digesting them.

2. They destroy old worn out cell organelles.

3. They digest the stored food and even own organelles during starvation

4. They help in intracellular digestion.

5. When a cell is destined to die, lysosomal enzymes digest the whole cell
