Since the development of radio technology from 1940’s, cell phone was invented and put into use widely. At the beginning, cell phones were mainly held by police officers and taxi drivers and allowed these people to communicate in an efficient way. However, the limit of the battery and the weight made cell phones not very practical at that time. And according to these problems, people had to connect them to the vehicles all the times. Until 1983, the first portable cell phone (the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X) has been brought to the world by Motorola. From 1983 to the end of 1980s, with the innovation in cellular networks, cell phones became popular because they enabled people talk in different areas and they were more easily to carry. Apart from the fact that cell phones have adapted long term use nowadays, they become much more small and functional.(1) Cell phones have been seen as an indispensable part of people’s lives. People use cell phones everywhere because they not only can talk with each others in different countries at the same time, they also can take pictures, play games, watch movies and listen to music by the cell phones.

The significance of cell phones to our society cannot be ignored. Cell phone offers the perfect way to connect with others. On one hand, in any emergent events, people have the ability to reach others quickly, which can save people’s lives. On the other hand, people can talk to their families, friends and business associates, which support people keep in touch with each others. Moreover, parents can use cell phones to monitor the safety of their children.(2) By installing a software in the cell phone, parents may know who their children are talking to and texting with, such as Radar, Mobile Spy and MobiStealth. These are designed to help parents with better ways to look after their children.

Cell phones’ role in social networks

Social network is not a strange word to us in our daily lives and even more, on the Internet because it is no longer limited by areas. Several years of competition among social media (Facebook, Twitter, MSN, etc.) have made tons of netizens. People not just make friends in reality, Internet has also opened another door for communication. But now the same phenomenon has been taken to cell phones. A market research company called Informa Telecoms shows in a report that “about 50 million [mobile users] … already use cell phone for social networking, from chat services to multimedia sharing in 2008.”(3) Cell phone has become an essential tool of communication.

The quantity of conversations

First above all, there are studies showing that there is a great number of people reporting that they can talk more with cell phones. They feel they are more open to others because they can use cell phones to instantly access the Facebook and Twitter and keep up to date with their friends. There is no denying that cell phone not only helps people talk to each others, but also offers different ways that people can use for more conversations. For example, if somebody wrote something on others’ wall on the Facebook at night, and then the others can see what they said in the next morning. By doing this, people have enough time to think about what they should response.

The false statistics about cell phones’ effects on people’s relationships

Secondly, people rely on the statistics made by researchers, which show that the relationships between people have been strengthened. Numerous studies put forward that cell phones are gaining an irreplaceable role of social interaction. A survey held by Midwestern University during 2009 to 2010, shows a majority of students thought that cell phones had strengthened their friendships.(6) Although these studies seem to be convincing, they might be supported by mobile companies such as Nokia, Motorola, Apple and so forth. Publishing articles about positive effects towards people’s relationships is a good way to promote the status of cell phones in consumers’ minds. As a matter of fact, cell phones are more likely isolating people in the modern society.

Conclusion

Needless to say, cell phones have brought countless benefits to the world and played an important role in our lives. But at the meanwhile, we have to consider more while using cell phones because every coin has two sides. Not to say the advantages that cell phones have brought to us. Cell phones are harm to people not only in health, but also in social network. It is detrimental because the conversation between people is decreasing; cell phones related companies may have made a point to publish positive statistics; and the relationship between people is getting worse. To genuinely evaluate the cell phones, politics, perhaps, plays a key effect.
