In simple words , he supported the khilafat movement coz he firstly though that muslims integration with them would power them more for the movemnet gandhi was planning for and secondly he though this would lead to unity in diversity and thus agreed and convinced the other members also about it....

The Khilafat issue gave Gandhiji the opportunity to bring the Hindus and Muslims on a common platform. A Khilafat committe was formed in Bombay in March 1919 to defend the Khalifa. ... They also wanted Mahatma Gandhi to take up the cause to build a united mass action.

Gandhi ji took up the Khilafat issue as a means to get the Indian Muslims to join the freedom movement of the Congress. He felt that as both the movements were aimed against the British, they could go together.
