Solution:

Let say    x kg

He used 3/4 kg of rice to make a dish

Hence Rice left with him = x  - 3/4  kg

He is left with 1/2 kg of Rice

Equate both

=> x - 3/4  = 1/2

Add 3/4 both sides

=> x - 3/4 + 3/4  = 1/2  + 3/4

=> x = ( 2 + 3) /4

=> x = 5/4

Hence he has 5/4 kg of rice in the beginning
