Hey friend here is your answer......
Answer :-
Osmosis :
The roots, with the help of root hairs , absorb water from the soil . Each root produces numerous root hairs as outgrowth of the epiblema ( skin of the root ) . These are unicellular structures resembling fine tubes, and lying close contact with the water surrounding soil particles . The plasma membrane of the root hair is selectively permeable (semipermeable) . It lets in water molecules from the soil by the process of osmosis . In Osmosis, water (or a solvent ) moves across a semipermeable membrane from an area where its molecules are present in higher concentration to when where they are less concentrated . As the concentration of water molecules in the soil is higher than that in the root hairs , water passes from the soil into the root hairs . The water then passes farther and farther into the root tissues by cell-to-cell osmosis , until it reaches the xylem of the root . It moves up the xylem vessels and reaches the leaves due to a pull created by transpiration .
Osmosis is seen in all organisms . Unicellular organisms such as chlamydomonas, Paramoecium and Amoeba are usually found in freshwater and gain water by osmosis . In these, the cell exchanges water with its surroundings continuously . The net intake for loss of water depends on the concentration of water molecules in the cytoplasm . If an animal cell or a plant cell is placed in a hypotonic (dilute) sugar solution , the cell gains water by osmosis . This is because the solution has a higher concentration of water molecules than the cytoplasm of the cell . However , if a cell is placed in a hypotonic (very concentrated) solution, it releases water into its surroundings and shrinks . In this case, the cytoplasm has a higher concentration of water molecules than the solution . If a cell is placed in an isotonic solution, there is no change in its size . An isotonic solution has the same concentration of water molecules as a cytoplasm . Thus , the amount of water lost from the cell is balanced by the amount gained from the solution.
