Osmosis is "movement of solvent molecules (water) pass through a semi permeable from a solution of lower concentration to a solution of higher concentration".

Explanation:

For example:

       consider a semipermeable membrane separate a chamber into two compartments.

  • pure water is added to first compartment.  ( low concentration)
  • sugar solution is added to second compartment. (high concentration)

       Since there is a difference in concentration between the liquid present in two compartments, the water molecules move first compartment to second compartment through semi permeable membrane.
