The answer to this question varies from person to person as it depends upon the mindset of each person along with their beliefs. Some people say it is extremely harmful and the others would say it is completed accepted but as each and every process on earth has its own pros and cons this too has both good points and harmful ones too.

Do you think that the use of animal fibre is ethical?

Yes, the use of animal fibres is ethical as long as no creature or plant life is harmed in the process of extracting fibres. That is, the use and extraction of animal fibres can be considered ethical if no animals are harmed in the process. This means that certain animal fibres are unethical to use and as said above each and every process on earth has its own pros and cons. Nowadays, there is a large use of modern technology, eco-friendly ways initiated by various organizations and well-awareness. Through these various means, use of animal-fibre can be turned into ethical.

Justification:

Why can we say that the use of animal fibres are ethical while many creatures are killed during the process of extraction of fibres?

⇒ There are many fibres that require killing the organisms that produce the fibre but modern technology and eco-friendly ways are rapidly growing as time is passing. This means that certain uses of fibres that were considered unethical earlier can be turned into ethical ones.

Consider the example of silk fibre. When silk worms are produced, mulberry trees are planted and the silkworms are allowed to grow on them. After that, before they turn into silk moths, their cocoons are collected, immersed in hot water which helps common man acquire silk fibre while killing silkworms.

Hence, use of silk fibre must be considered unethical.

Nowadays, old means of sericulture is replaced by organic sericulture. Also known as peace/wild sericulture, this mean of silk production is much more eco-friendly and allows silk worms to turn into moths. Organic silk material is now commonly available in markets and is slowly replacing the old means of silk production.

Even though contradictory to the first statement, we can now say that the use of silk fibre is ethical.

⇒ Many misconceptions lead people to believe that the extraction of wool from sheep is a very painful process for them and that some even die due to this extraction.

This belief is absolutely wrong.

We know that sheep are found in the cold regions of the Earth and that they grow wool to keep themselves warm. As time changes, summer season starts and the environment starts getting hòt. With the wool present on the sheep they get extremely hòt and uncomfortable. Excessive prone to this kind of environment can cause hazardous infections to the sheep, heat strokes and even death.

Thus, farmers shear off the wool from the sheep. Here comes another misconception- Sheep are sheared along with their skin. No, they are not!

The wool is present above the skin in a thin layer and it is that layer which is shaved off. The sheep will not even know that their wool is being shaved off.

So, in this case, certain people believe that usage of wool is unethical due to misconceptions but scientifically and logically speaking, its use is ethical.
