Our constitution abolished the practice of untouchability and declared it a crime. Do you think it has been fully abolished in practice

Legal Measures against Untouchability. Indian law does not permit the practice of untouchability. Article 17 of the Constitution of India bans the practice. The government of India has passed the Untouchability Act, 1955, to eliminate any form of caste based discrimination.

There is another act to punish casteist harassment called The SC and the ST (prohibition against atrocities)Act, 1989. It prescribed very harsh punishments.

Constitution of India ensures Equality before law and it includes equal treatement for every citizen irrespective of his caste, race, religion, gender or place of birth.
