Basic structure of our constitution is federal in nature, as our constitution possesses the minimal requirement of being called a a federal nation.. while at the same time.. our constitution also has unitary features…. Some examples of unitary features are (I) During emergency the central government controls the entire nation.. just as, if it had revoke the delegated powers from the states.. (ii) The centre can change or modify a given state with the consent of the president, which is a violation of federal polity.. Thus at times we may call ourself federal in nature but we also can't deny that we also have unitary features.. thus we can conclude that although indian constitution is federal in form but unitary in spirit..
Hope it help you...

Federalism is considered to be one of the most important aspects of modern constitutionalism. The Constitution of the United States of America is the first federal constitution in the world. As it is democratic in nature and more suitable to a vast country like India, the framers of the Constitution accepted the federal form of Government.
