Our Earth has a diverse environment including biotic and abiotic components. Diversity in the ecosystem is significant to human existence for a variety of reasons. Ecosystem diversity boosts the availability of oxygen via the process of Photosynthesis done by plants. Although the planet Earth has an abundance of biological diversity, certain ecosystems have far more species than others. The most species-rich environments appear to be tropical rain forests, deciduous forests, coral reefs, large tropical lakes, and perhaps the deep sea and oceans. Some examples of ecosystems that are rich in diversity are deserts, forests, large marine ecosystems, old growth forests, rain forests, tundra ecosystem, coral reefs etc.

There is need to conserve these ecosystem diversity because the diversity of life across much of Earth has plunged below safe levels. When biodiversity levels fall too low, it means that large parts of our various ecosystems lose their resilience or even, at the extreme, cease to function.
