The main character- Matilda is a young woman who is constantly vexed and frustrated dur to her situation. She was born in a family of clerks and is married to a clerk, but she constantly fantasizes of delicacies and luxuries that are unavailable to her. Though she is not rich, she is well to do and should have been contended with her life, instead she chose to continuously blame situations for her condition.
She did not accept her situation as it was and dreamt for luxuries. This led to further unhappiness and the cycle this continued.
When her husband brought the invitation for the party, she should have agreed to go as she was, but she, on her part, blew up 400 francs on a dress and borrowed jewels. She did it want to appear poor in front of the other rich officials. She should have accepted her circumstances, instead of pretending they didn't exist.
