The villagers were deeply regretful that they had neglected to properly learn their native language, that is why on the last day they occupied the last benches and tried to absorb as much as they could in the short time. M Hamel too regretted that he hadn't been able to teach them everything he wanted to, and so left them with a powerful message

In the story'The Last Lesson', Alphonse Daudet has beautifully remarked the importance of own's learning native language as it is a part of our culture.

Some elderly persons had come to to attend the french class to show respect to their native language and salute M.Hamel who gave his forty years of faithful service. They were regretful of not being able to to learn the french language properly but it shows their love for their language as they came on the last day of the french lesson and absorb as much as they could in one day
