Answer:
My mother was 14 and my father was 17 when they got married. I always thought there was something wrong in how I would be beaten black and blue for any “offense.” My mother stopped physically punishing me when I started high school, and my father stopped because one day I ran when he was about to unbuckle his belt and I shouted at him that he had no right to ever hit me again, making him so angry he became murderous. He was also drunk. My mother intervened and sent me to my Grandma’s where I stayed for three days. My mother later came with a message - my father wanted me to come home, he apologized, and promised the same thing will never happen again. I got so angry - ‘Why isn’t he apologizing to me in person? He should be here apologizing and making such promise himself, not send you, Ma.” My mother, grandmother, and an aunt were so frustrated. My grandmother threatened to throw me out of her house if I didn’t go with my mother. I did and seeing my father smile shyly when he saw me made me feel like I was the worst human being there was in the world. My father put an arm on my shoulder, told me how sorry he was and promised the same thing would never happen again, but could I promise one thing, that I never shout at him again? After all, he was still my father. I promised. We never spoke of this again.
