The human ribs act as a cage around the lungs, heart and organs present in the thoracic region.

It is not a rigid structure and is made up of 24 ribs, cartilages, and 12 vertebrae. The muscles and skin holding it in place makes it flexible and allows the lung to expand and contract during breathing. Most importantly, it provides protection to the organs, from external injuries.

The muscles of neck, thorax, back and upper abdomen are attached to the rib cage and muscles connected to it.
