Our world is facing an unprecedented environmental crisis with numerous species on the verge of extinction and continued increase in global temperatures. In nature, our solutions  lie, which emphasize optimism, unity and the importance of working together at all levels to create a life-long future in peace with nature.

Explanation:

  • Notwithstanding all the concrete evolution and luxury of the 21st century, we all agree that nature is vital for the existence of mankind. Biodiversity is an irreplaceable part of our global life in providing various ecosystem services, including water, food , energy  air & medicine and a variety of products and services.
  • Estimates show: over 2 billion people depend on fuelwood to fulfill their primary energy needs, 4 billion people depend mainly for their well-being on natural medicines and some 70 per cent of cancer-inspired medications are natural or organic. Human reliance on biodiversity is growing, as the potential of nature to continue to deliver these alternatives to future generation is gradually removed.
  • However, our increasing dependency has contributed to its rapid collapse, given the fact that we have turned to the natural world for our solutions. More than 2/3 of the risk for all animal species is the product of habitat destruction and depletion and over-exploitation.  The problem has become even more severe even after 27 years since the Rio Earth Summit in 1992, when the first overall commitment for biodiversity conservation was agreed to prevent a scenario of further loss of biodiversity.
  • The future of main freshwater sources & terrestrial biodiversity hangs in a delicate balance as the nation progresses in its process of rapid development. The country's biodiversity appears to be under pressure as a result of loss of habitats due to human activity, infrastructure growth, agricultural expansion and wasteful harvesting, burning & overgrazing.
  • All of these risks differ by scope, severity and irreversibility and must be understood, prioritized and handled & addressed accordingly. We have the opportunity to learn from "evolving planning paradigms" in this period of growth that stress the importance of sustainable development. The role of nature as a solution provider is critical when developing economic recovery solutions.
  • The bond of mankind with nature calls for immediate reform and regeneration. The year 2020 was supposed to be a key turning point in this history, with important dialogues, discussions and decisions about climate change and the conservation of biodiversity, mainly aimed at improving human lives. Now we are compelled to consider the ongoing environmental problems arising from climate change and depletion of biodiversity following the catastrophe of the Covid-19 pandemic and all its economic and social consequences.
  • As we are now better understand the value of biodiversity and now know how big the problem is — and the possible dimension of the solution too — we have the chance of "bend the curve" or even reverse the loss of biodiversity for the welfare of humans and all forms of life on Earth. We are now at the very moment when loss of biological diversity is at its greatest, as some experts put it.
  • There is an immediate need to conserve our natural resources, to avoid the extinction and abundance of biodiversity on our planet and to apply a balanced approach to our development and consumption in order to ensure that human populations have sufficient food and water.
  • Traditional approaches in biodiversity conservation such as plants, protected areas and landscape protection will still remain vital, but efforts must now tackle critical causes of loss of biodiversity and ecological changes in the light of any new threats and challenges.
  • Approaches & strategies need to be developed, which can combine economic , societal & environmental goals, avoid trade-offs and highlight win-win scenarios, ultimately lead to the construction of a future in which people live in accordance with nature.
  • The International Day of Biodiversity (22 May) is a crucial recall: our "solutions are in nature" and this recognition will embody our emphasis, interest and commitments.

Biodiversity - Our solutions are in nature

Biodiversity, or organic diversity, is the multitude of residing things that make up lifestyles on Earth. It encompasses the 8 million or so species at the planet, from flora and animals to fungi and bacteria, and the ecosystems that residence them together with oceans, forests, mountain environments and coral reefs.

Why is biodiversity critical for people?  -  “Despite all our technological advances we are completely established on wholesome and colourful ecosystems for our water, food, medicines, clothes, fuel, shelter and energy,”.

Biodiversity guarantees that we've got fertile soil, as well as lots of foods, including culmination and veggies to eat. It is the muse of most of our industries and livelihoods and helps regulate climate through carbon garage and regulating rainfall. It additionally filters our air and water and mitigates the impact of natural failures along with landslides and coastal storms.

On land, the maximum essential ecosystems and biodiversity refuges are forests, which are home to most of Earth’s terrestrial biodiversity such as: 68% of mammal species, 80% of amphibian species, and 75% of chicken species, in line with The State of the World’s Forests.
