Vanity is the constant enemy of our dignity. This statement is shown in light in the context of the story the necklace.
Mathilde was a very beautiful lady. She wished to have better ornaments and clothes so that she could appear like a rich woman. She borrowed a chain from her friend to wear at a marriage party. Unfortunately, she misplaced it and could not return it.
She worked long hours to earn enough money to buy a necklace to replace the one which she had lost. She finally gathered enough money and brought a dazzling necklace and gave it to her friend. Later on, she came to know that the necklace was made of paste and she had wasted her vigour for nothing. She regretted it a lot.
