Number of students passed in first division , second division and third division are 24 , 12 and 4 respectively

Given :

40 students are in a class

60% passed in first division, 30% in second division and remaining in third division

To find :

The number of students in each category

Solution :

Step 1 of 3 :

Calculate the number of students passed in first division

Total number of students in the class = 40

Now 60% passed in first division

∴ The number of students passed in first division

\displaystyle \sf{ = 40 \times  \frac{60}{100}   }

\displaystyle \sf{  } = 24

Step 2 of 3 :

Calculate the number of students passed in second division

Total number of students in the class = 40

Now 30% passed in second division

∴ The number of students passed in second division

\displaystyle \sf{ = 40 \times  \frac{30}{100}   }

\displaystyle \sf{  } = 12

Step 3 of 3 :

Calculate the number of students passed in third division

Total number of students in the class = 40

Number of students passed in first division = 24

Number of students passed in second division = 12

∴ The number of students passed in third division

= 40 - (24 + 12)

= 40 - 36

= 4
