Given :  Out of 72 employees working in a company there are some permanent employees and the rest (more than 1) are contract employees. One-fourth of the contract employees

are eligible for the annual increment and one-third of the permanent employees are not eligible for the annual increment.

To Find : What can be the minimum number of employees not eligible for the annual increment?

Solution:

Let say

    Permanent Employees     =  12x            ( 0 < x  < 6 )

=>  Contract employees  = 72 - 12x

one-fourth of the contract employees  =  (72 - 12x)/4  = 18 - 3x

18 - 3x  eligible for the annual increment

Not eligible  for the annual increment  =  72 - 12x  -  (18 - 3x)

= 54 - 9x

one-third of the permanent employees = 12x/3  = 4x

not eligible for the annual increment   =  54 - 9x + 4x

54 -  5x

minimum number of employees not eligible for the annual increment

when x is max means 5

=> 54 - 5(5)

=>  29

29 employees not eligible for the annual increment.
