  • The frenulum is a fold of skin beneath the tongue that supports its position and provides flexible and easy motion of the tongue.
  • Papillae are little raised bumps on the tongue that consists of taste buds.
  • The tongue has voluntary muscles i.e it is under our control.
  • Taste buds are present on the papillae on the tongue that help to sense the taste of food. The bitter taste is recognized by the back of the tongue, salty and sour tastes are recognized by its sides and sweet is recognized by the front part of the tongue.
  • A pair of parotid salivary glands are present in the mouth, beneath the ears which secrete saliva containing amylases for partial digestion of starch and complex sugars. It also has Lysozymes to kill certain bacteria and pathogens entering through the mouth.
