Let total income be x Spent on house rent=x/5 Spent on household expenses =7x/10 x-x/5-7x/10=1800 On solving,we get  x/10=1800 x=18000 is the required income.

Let's assume income of mrs. Mathur  to be RS 100.

If mrs. Mathur spends 20% on house rent, he will be left with 80% of RS100

80% of Rs 100=80/100×100⇒RS 80

Now out of 80 he spends 70%, so now he is left with 100/70 = 30%

30% of Rs 180=30/100×80⇒RS 24

∴on Rs 100 he saves RS 24

∴onRe1 he saves Rs 24/100

∴on RS1800 he saves RS 24/100×1800

=7500.

So the total income is RS 7500. ANS
