AgCl shows Frenkel defect while NaCl does not. Give reason. Frenkel defect is shown by those in which there is large difference in the size of cations and anions. Hence, Frenkel defect is shown by AgCl due to small size of Ag+ ion but not by NaCl because alkali metal ions can not fit into interstital sites.

When there is a dislocation of a point in a crystalline solid it is called Frenkel Defect. Considering the nature of a crystalline solid they are bound by ionic bonds also called electrovalent bonds. When the attraction between to two atoms in the crystal is strong enough and the charges are properly isolated between a cation and an anion it is capable to form a crystal defects.
NaCl undergoes strong ionization when in an electrolytic medium; this suggests that Na and Cl carry individual charges implying it to impart crystal defects. When in case of Ag – Cl the bond is covalent and the electrons are shared among the two atoms due to their large atomic size and low electronegativity difference.
Thus NaCl shows crystal defects while AgCl does not.
