14 is the largest number that multiplied by 7 yields a number ≤ 100 (viz. 98).

12 is the largest number that multiplied by 8 yields a number ≤ 100 (viz. 96).

There are 26 numbers that satisfy one or the other condition However, 56 satisfies both.

Therefore there are 25 different numbers, out of 100, that satisfy the condition.

Hence the answer is 25/100 = 1/4.

Given:

Numbers 1, 2, 3, .., 100.

To find:

The probability of the number divisible by 7 or 8.

Solution:

The sample space = 100

The numbers divisible by 7 in 1 to 100 = 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, 56, 63, 70, 77, 84, 91, 98.

There are 14 numbers.

The numbers divisible by 8 in 1 to 100 = 8, 16, 24, 32, 40, 48, 56, 64, 72, 80, 88, 96.

There are 12 numbers.

The numbers divisible by 7 or 8 = 25

Hence,

By probability,

The probability of a number divisible by 7 or 8 = The numbers divisible by 7 or 8 / Sample space

25/100

Therefore, P(divisible by 7 or 8) = 1/4
