Given,

Two wires P and Q.

To find,

Which wire has greater resistance?

Solution,

  • The resistance of a wire is inversely proportional to the area of the cross-section.
  • Resistance of wire is calculated by R=p(l/A), where p is resistivity constant, l is the length of the conductor and A is the area of conductor
  • The higher the resistance of the wire smaller is the area of the wire.
  • Wire P has an area of cross-section A, while wire Q has an area of cross-section as A/2 hence the wire Q has higher resistance than wire P.

Therefore Q has greater resistance.
