Let the total no of deer be x

So, we have

$x - ( \frac{1}{2} x + \frac{3}{4} \times \frac{1}{2} x) = 9 \\ x - ( \frac{1}{2} x + \frac{3}{4} x) = 9 \\ x - \frac{7}{8} x = 9 \\ \frac{1}{8} x = 9$

Thus, x=72 deer in the herd.
