Anions are negative ions; they traveltowards the anode during electrolysis. For example, OH-and Cl-, where they may give up electrons (2Cl-(aq) –– Cl2(g) + 2e). Cations are positive ions; they travel towards the cathode during electrolysis. For example, H+, Na+, Cu2+, where they may gain electrons (Cu2+ + 2e –– Cu).
Or
At the cathode: H+ ions migrate towards the cathode and are discharged as hydrogen gas.
