The Maharashtra plateau is formed by volcanic eruption and also called volcanic plateau and therefore basalttype of rock is seen. The plateau of Maharashtra was formed as a result of prolonged volcanic activity, which laid several layers of hardened magma, one on top of the other.

These rocks are known as igneous rocks – formed as a result of cooling and subsequent solidification of molten magma, which is brought to the surface of the earth through cracks, fissures or volcanic eruptions.
