Barackpur of Bengal saw the first spark of sepoy mutiny. On 29th March, 1857, Mangal Pandey of 34 NI Regiment, a brahmin sepoy refused to use enfield rifle, Mangal Pandey murdered a higher army official. By the order of General Hearse he was captured and hanged. The 34 NI regiment was also immediately disbanded.

Mangal Pandey became the first martyr of great revolt and events of Barackpur spread to different parts of India like fire. On 10th May, 1857 the open revolt of sepoy force broke out at Meerut. They murdered the British officails, burnt own their houses and freed the prisoners. Hereafter the sepoys rushed towards Delhi.

Delhi came under the control of rebels on 11th May. Indian sepoys stationed at Delhi cooperated and the Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah II was declared as the Emperor of India. Bahadur Shah II was declared as the Emperor of India. Bahdur Shah II reluctantly accepted the leadership of the revolt and wrote letters to native Indian kings to join the movement. The fall of Delhi had electrifying imapct. Bengal, Ayodhya, Allhabad, Kanpur, Aligarh, Rohilakhand, Daob, Bundelakhand, Central India, Bihar and East Punjab experienced the tremors of revoltFrom river Sutlej to river Narmada the fire of revolution spread. The revolt of Lucknow was led by Begum Hazrat Mahal. She declared her own minor son Qadir as the Nawab under her regentship. She gheraoed the palace of British resident at Lucknow with the help of Zamindars, Taluqdars and sepoys. Resident Sir Henry Lawrence died during the siege. The rescue team under General Outram and Havelock faced the wrath of revolt.

The revolt in Kanpur was led by Nana Sahib and his efficient minister Ramachandra Pandurang alias Tantiya Tope. Nana Sahib was the adopted son of Peshwa Baji Rao II and he declared to fight against the British under the leadership of Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah II. The rebellious forces in Kanpur forced the British army to surrender and general messacre of British was enacted.

At last the battalion of Tantiya Tope reached Jhansi and joined the forces of Rani Lakshmi Bai.Rani Lakshmi Bai was a great enemy of the Britishers because of doctorine of Lapse. Her adopted son Ananda Rao was not recognised as ruler and Jhansi was incorporated to British Empire. The combined forces of Rani of Jhansi and Tantya with the help of trusted Afghan soldeirs occupied Gwalior.

The Rajput warrior Kunwar Singh directed the course of revolt in Bihar. Besides managing rebellion in Bihar, Kanwar also proceeded with his army to Oudh and Central India. The courage and conviction of eighty year old Kunwar became a memorable event in the histroy of sepoy of mutiny. The local leaders of Rajsthan, some local Chieftains of Hydrabad, Taluqdar Mansingh of Shahganj,Hanumanta Singh of Sultanpur,Maulavi Ahamed Shah of Faizabad, Veer Surendra Sai and Chakhi Khuntia of Orissa also raised the banner of revolt. The fury and emotion of sepoy mutiny subsided when British fought desperately to change the course of war.
