Gears are used to control the engine’s output power with varying load conditions.

A given engine produces constant power (at a mass flow of air, fuel injected and etc) and as we know P (power) = T.w where, T is torque and w is angular speed of the shaft.

So, with the use of gears, using different gear ratios we can vary either T or w. As we know, first gear is the biggest gear (in terms of diameter) therefore it has higher torque and eventually lesser wheel speed. Where as, 5th gear is the smaller in Dia and so it has less torque but higher vehicle speeds are attained at it.

So gears help a driver manipulate the Torque or Angular velocity of the output shaft thereby helping him to adjust according to varying load condition.
