- By late 18th century , various Maratha chiefs had controlled different regions in India who belonged to different dynasties like the Sindhia, Holkar, Gaikwad and Bhonsle.These chiefs formed an alliance or confederacy unbder the Peshwa, who became the administrative and military head of these chiefs. There were three wars fought between the East India company and the Maratha empire, between 1777 and 1818.The increased desire among the British to control the region, to meddle in the internal affairs, and the internal war of succession among the marathas lead to the war.
- In the first anglo maratha war, led to the victory of the British , resulting in the sign of treaty of Wadgaon, in which British ahd to part with their territorires.In the Second anglo war as per the treaties, British got back their lost territories.The third war led to decisive victory of the British.By this time, the British has already established, control over the country and with their superior and advanced military capabilities, they could defeat marathas.
