Abiotic component of ecosystem includes basic inorganic elements and compounds, such as soil, water, oxygen, calcium carbonates, phosphates and a variety of organic compounds (by-products of organic activities or death).

We can recognize four functional components of an ecosystem:
1) abiotic factors,
2) producers,
3) consumers, and
4) decomposers. The latter three are living components, what Odum (1959) termed the three "functional kingdoms of nature", so important and universal is their presence in ecosystems.
