What is the cause of overthinking? How can we avoid it?
Most common reason of overthinking is fear - fear of failure, fear of being embarrassed, fear of ridicule. Try to identify what is the reason of your overthinking. If it is past failure, it does not mean you cannot succeed next time. If you have been embarrassed or ridiculed before, it is not necessary you will have the same outcome again. First of all get rid of all your mental fears.
Overthinking causes, your judgment to get cloudy and stress gets elevated. You spend too much time in the negative. It is very important to stay in the present. Here and Now. No one can predict future. There is no limit to human imagination and that creates worries, concerns of things which have not yet happened. All because of "Over thinking".
Try these simple steps daily to reduce your stress levels by not overthinking.
Be aware about your thoughts. Any time you find yourself doubting or feeling stressed or anxious, step back and look at the situation and how you're responding. It is this exact moment when you need to change your response.
Don't think of what can go wrong, but what can go right. When you focus on all the negative things that might happen, it's easy to become paralyzed. Positive visualization is an asset. Visualize all the things that can go right and keep those thoughts present and up front.
Pay attention to how you start your day. Do you get up all tired and feeling low. Most probably you will continue feeling low and negative the entire day. On the other hand if you wake up fresh, with a calm mind and feeling positive, you will be amazed to see how well your day goes. It does not mean everything will go your way. But things which do not go your way, you will still take in your stride and overcome the obstacles.
If you find yourself over thinking, stop and take 5 minutes to think. If it's not gonna matter in 5 years, don’t spend more than 5 minutes being upset about it.
Perfection is a myth. Being ambitious is great but aiming for perfection is unrealistic and impractical. Never wait for things to be perfect. Start with what you have, where you are. Accept that situations are not in your control, but your response to them is.
Overcome your fear and failures. Just because things did not work out before does not mean that has to be the outcome every time. Prepare a plan when you are working on something. If plan A fails, go to plan B. If everything fails, think outside the box. Change the way you are approaching the problem.
Start putting things in wider perspective. If you are bad at making decisions, learn how to make good effective decisions. Set a deadline for you actions. If you are too much into multi tasking, start doing single tasks with complete focus.
Find time for work out. Jogging, gym, exercise will all release your pent up negative energy. Listen to music when you work out. Do some activity which makes you happy. Eat healthy and follow a sleep pattern.
