8. Coal is a solid fuel which is mainly composed of carbon, it also contain hydrogen, 1+1+1=1=4
sulphur, oxygen and nitrogen. It is a fossil fuel. It is burnt for getting heat and
energy. About two third of presently mined coal is burnt in power station to make
electricity. Burning of coal contributes to many environmental and health issues.
China is the largest producer and consumer of coal in the world. Coal however is
available only in a limited quantity. Hence, we must use it judiciously. We must
also increase our dependence on alternative sources of energy.
