In a chemical reaction when reactants get reduced then product gets oxidized and vice- versa

Whenever a oxidation reaction takes place, then one of the reactants gains oxygen while the other loses oxygen.

Hence by definition, one substance is getting oxidised while the other is getting reduced.

That is why it is also called redox reaction.
