Let the oxidation no of carbon be Y. Therefore,we know that for Hydrogen oxidation no is 1 and for oxygen -2. The sum of the oxidation numbers of all of the atoms in a neutral compound is 0. Therefore Oxidation number of Carbon in C2H5OH is -2.
