Oxidation of methanol lead to the formation of Methanal, which is an aldehyde or methanoic acid which is a carboxylic acid.
The product of the reaction may vary depending on the conditions in which the oxidation reaction is taking place.
1. When oxidation reaction is carried in the presence of potassium permanganate, and warming takes place methanoic acid is formed.
2. When oxidation reaction is carried in the presence of potassium permanganate and no warming takes place, and the product is distilled as it forms, methanal is formed.
