we have to find the oxidation potential of hydrogen electrode at 1 atm pressure H₂ gas dipped in 0.001 M HCl solution at 25° C
solution : here, HCl ⇄ H⁺ + Cl⁻
so the concentration of hydrogen ions = [ H⁺ ] = 0.001 M
and then at hydrogen electrode,
H⁺ + e⁻ ⇄ 1/2 H₂
now from Nernst equation,
reduction potential of H₂ = E₀ - 0.0591/n log 1/[H⁺]
= 0 - 0.0591/1 log1/(10⁻³)
= - 0.0591 × 3 = -0.1773 V
we know, oxidation potential = - reduction potential = +0.1773 volts
therefore the oxidation potential of hydrogen gas will be +0.1773 volts.
