The oxidising agent used in the manufacture of KMnO4 is potassium chlorate.

  • KMnO4 or potassium permanganate can be prepared by combining potassium hydroxide( KOH) and manganese oxide( MnO2) in the presence of the oxidising agent, potassium chlorate( KClO3).

  • The reaction is given as:

6KOH + 3MnO2 + 6KClO3 -----> 3K2MnO9( Potassium Manganate) + 6KCl + 3H2O

Potassium Manganate( green) ----> converted into the potassium permanganate by certain conditions

6K2MnO4 + 3Cl2 ----->  6KMnO4 (Potassium Permanganate) + 6KCl
