atomic no of oxygen is 8 so it's electron configuration is 2and 6but every element for stable it needs to complete it's octet so oxygen have 6valence electron not 8 so it is difficult to lose that six electrons to achieve inertness so oxygen gain 2electron to complete it's octet 6+2=8 so that's why it's valency is -2
