Answer:

Oxygen is prepared commercially on a large scale by fractional distillation of liquified air.

Explanation:

Oxygen is a gas used widely for many purposes- starting for use in the industry for cutting steel to as a life saver in hospitals!

Commercially, oxygen is obtained by fractional distillation.

What is the process of fractional distillation of air?

In this method, the air is passed through a supercooled chamber and cooled down to -200°C. As the temperature goes down-

  • Water vapour condenses and is removed using absorbent filters from the air mixture.
  • Next, Carbon dioxide solidifies at -79°C, and it is removed.
  • As the temperature decreases further, the air liquefies and the air mixture contains a mixture of liquid nitrogen and liquid oxygen.
  • The liquid nitrogen and oxygen are then separated by fractional distillation.

The liquid air mixture is passed through the bottom of a separating column. The temperature at the bottom of this column is comparatively higher than in the upper region.

Oxygen is less volatile than Nitrogen. Nitrogen has a boiling point of -190°C, whereas, oxygen has a boiling point of -185°C.

Thus, by this method, nitrogen and oxygen are separated out. Oxygen is collected at the bottom and nitrogen is collected from the top.

Conclusion:

Thus, oxygen is obtained commercially by fractional distillation of liquified air.
