Well, in the chemical experiments, it was found to be attracted to the magnetic field , and hence was termed as paramagnetic in nature.

However, the only true explanation for this characteristic of oxygen molecule was given by the theory of molecular orbitals, wherein in it's molecular orbital structure, the molecule was found to contain two unpaired electrons in each of the two antibonding π orbitals (2p).

  • The species which contains a lone pair of electrons in its HOMO or LUMO is regarded as a paramagnetic species.
  • From the molecular orbital diagram of the oxygen molecule, we can see that the SOMO of oxygen is π* or antibonding π orbital and it contains two unpaired electrons. Hence oxygen molecule is paramagnetic.
