Ozone molecules are constantly formed and destroyed in the atmosphere. A picture (cartoon) showing how ozone molecules are formed is shown below.
A family member of yours who has never studied about this tries to understand the cartoon pictures but is unable to understand it. He knows that there are no such living forms in atmosphere but he is not able to understand names like O, O2 and O3 and also the process explained.

O is the nacent oxygen ...which has oxidative properties ...as the apple turns brown after some time it is due to oxygen ...it's function is like this only .
O2 is present in the air we breathe ...if it's not present then you wouldn't be alive right now.
O3 protects us from bad heat (UV rays) from sun
